Picking a Mattress with Your Sleeping Style in Mind

Did you know that a good night’s rest can help boost your immune system, make you less susceptible to disease and illness, and even energize your body's metabolism? That’s why choosing the right mattress is so important.

Interestingly, how you sleep (on your back, stomach, or side) can play a role in how wellyou sleep. Here are some helpful tips to help you decide on a mattress based on your sleep position:

Back Sleepers

Medium-firm mattresses are best. If you aren’t able to change your mattress just yet, place a pillow under your legs to better align your back.

Proper neck and back alignment encourages muscle relaxation and healthy breathing. Because of this, memory foam pillows are an excellent choice.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers commonly experience pressure on joints and muscles. A soft mattress that conforms to your body, like a gel or memory foam mattress, will help alleviate pressure points.

Pillows are not recommended for stomach sleepers. But if you must use one, choose a very thin pillow, or a memory-foam style that gently cushions and supports.

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers tend to experience the Goldilocks effect. Too firm of a mattress can place pressure on the shoulders and hips, while too soft of a mattress can cause improper spinal alignment. Test out memory foam, latex, innerspring and other types to find the most comfortable mattress for you.

Supporting the gap between the shoulder and head is crucial to preventing a stiff neck and back. A memory foam or gel pillow is a good choice here.

No matter what kind of mattress or pillows you choose, make sure you choose a foundation that’s engineered to provide your mattress with a level and firm base. This can help prolong the life of your mattress and keep you comfortable, while giving you a great night’s rest.
